Dr Stephen Darling (PhD) is the Joint Head of Division and a Senior Lecturer in the Psychology, Sociology and Education Division. He is also a Full member of the Centre for Applied Social Science.

I joined Queen Margaret in 2008 as a lecturer in psychology, having previously worked at the University of Aberdeen as a lecturer, and at the University of Edinburgh and Goldsmiths’ College, London as a research fellow.

It is hard to overestimate the role of memory in human activity. Everything about you, everything you believe, your production of language, your sense of self – all of these are intimately bound up in memory. Understanding memory is therefore a necessity to understand the nature of our humanity. My research is aimed at questions within memory that I find interesting or important, and which can be tackled using scientific methods. Theoretical interests include understanding how the different components of working memory come together to guide and shape behaviour. Applied interests include the functioning of memory across the lifespan, the impact of uneven spatial processing on behaviour, including safety related behaviour, relationship of visual memory and body image, and any situation where the function of the memory system impacts daily life.
