Alternative Business Models: What are the Options? - online event, Thursday 6 March

This interactive online session will explore a variety of business models including social enterprises, co-operatives, community-owned businesses and more, to enable participants to choose the best model for their business needs.

It is aimed at East Lothian:

• �� ��Charities looking to develop commercially
• �� ��Businesses considering a more 'purpose-led' model

The event will take place from 7 - 9pm on Thursday 6th March 2025, and will be co-hosted by East Lothian Council, and the consortium.

6-week ‘Compassionate Mind Training’ course

Thursdays, 3.30-5.30pm starting on the 13th March

Do you ever feel that you are your own worst critic? Or find it hard to regulate your emotions? ��If so, this course might be helpful!

This course is useful for anxious over-thinkers, perfectionists or students who struggle to know what to do with their anger/anxiety/ other difficult emotions. ��
It’s helpful for low self-esteem and self-criticism.

What’s involved?

• �� ��Each session will involve a mixture of taught content and experiential exercises and practices (e.g. mindfulness, imagery, letter writing).
• �� ��The sessions will be IN PERSON on campus.
• �� ��It is important that you aim to attend all 6 sessions.��
• �� ��Please bring an open mind and a readiness to listen to others with kindness.

Applications for the Scottish Government Microfinance Fund 2025 are now invited from current students and staff of ����ֱ��.��

This fund is intended to support students and staff from Scottish universities in achieving their entrepreneurial ambitions by offering awards of £1,000 - £3,000 to help them test and progress their business ideas.��

Current ����ֱ�� students and staff are eligible to apply. Projects must be pre-incorporation without a business bank account and must have received less than £5,000 in financial support for business, commercialisation or enterprise activities to date.��

Inspiring graduate and Honorary Graduate Sally Gray MBE will be speaking in conversation with Dr Sara Smith, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, about her journey from ����ֱ�� student to prime-time TV presenter. After studying Communication and Media Studies (����ֱ�� class of 1989), Sally has gone on to collaborate with some of the biggest names in UK media and run a highly successful media training business, Presenters Inc.

in recognition of her significant contribution to culture and the creative arts.

Parking on Campus

We would like to remind everyone that the University car park is particularly busy on Tuesdays and Thursdays; due to high demand, we cannot guarantee parking spaces for all users. To avoid inconvenience, please arrive early and be prepared for potential queues. You may also wish to consider alternative options such as the Park and Ride at Newcraighall, which is within walking distance of the campus and connected by direct bus services. Additionally, we encourage you to explore public transport and sustainable travel options.

Parking in Local Areas

It is important that staff and students respect our neighbours and adhere to parking restrictions in the local areas surrounding our campus. Please note that parking on ����ֱ�� Drive is not permitted, and enforcement is carried out by East Lothian Council on all roads surrounding the campus. Additionally, parking on kerbs, footways, and verges is not permitted as it is unsafe and causes damage.

Musselburgh Railway Station Car Park

Parking is only for ScotRail customers using Musselburgh Station. Non-customers using the station car park may be subject to enforcement action by British Transport Police under The Railway Byelaws. Those parking outside of marked bays, on double yellow lines, or in disabled bays without a Blue Badge will be fined.

Musselburgh Controlled Parking Zone

To ensure that our neighbours can access their homes, parking within the residential streets adjacent to the campus is controlled by East Lothian Council through limited waiting times and permits. To avoid receiving a £100 penalty charge notice, drivers should comply with the restrictions indicated by the signs and markings displayed on the streets. Further details can be found here. For the benefit of our neighbours, please respect these restrictions and refrain from parking in residential areas around the campus.

Horizon remote access maintenance Friday 18:00 - 19:00

Information Technology Services (ITS) will be performing critical maintenance on the Horizon remote access between 18:00 and 19:00 on Friday, 28th February.

During the maintenance window, access to Horizon remotely will be at risk, resulting in being unable to connect or being disconnected from the service till maintenance is complete. We recommend all work be saved prior to 18:00.

Access on campus to horizon via a Terminal/PC or a device connected to eduroam will continue to work throughout the work.

Do you ever feel that you are your own worst critic? Or find it hard to regulate your emotions?  If so, this course might be helpful!

This course is useful for anxious over-thinkers, perfectionists or students who struggle to know what to do with their anger/anxiety/ other difficult emotions.  
It’s helpful for low self-esteem and self-criticism.

What’s involved?

•    Each session will involve a mixture of taught content and experiential exercises and practices (e.g. mindfulness, imagery, letter writing).
•    The sessions will be IN PERSON on campus.
•    It is important that you aim to attend all 6 sessions. 
•    Please bring an open mind and a readiness to listen to others with kindness.

Here at ELS (Room 1153 in the LRC) we offer support with many aspects of academic study, including reading strategies, academic writing and time planning. Here are a few ways you can engage with us this semester:

1. Join us for a session of group study at our Writing and Study Space

This semester, the Effective Learning Service is opening its doors, every Tuesday afternoon 1-4pm, as a Writing and Study Space. Bring along an assignment you’re writing up, or something you’re reading through, and work alongside your peers in a focused, friendly and encouraging environment. Free tea, coffee and biscuits is available at most sessions.

You can pop along at any point in the three hours without booking but, if you can, please register your interest at:

Digital Capabilities PALS session

Do you feel that you need some guidance with using the various digital resources needed for doing well in your studies at university?

����ֱ�� have invested in access to a Digital Capabilities resource which can help you identify your strengths in using digital technologies and the areas which you could develop and use better.

The Peer Assisted Learning Scheme (PALS) leaders have completed training so that they can help you access the resource and work your way through it to help you develop your digital capabilities.

We have scheduled two PALS sessions focused on Digital Capabilities for students in the Health School:

MFA Registration Campaign

Good Afternoon

To continue to keep all accounts secure within the University, IT will be enabling a second MFA Registration campaign. This will require you to complete sign up for MFA on your account if you haven't already done so when you next login to ����ֱ�� systems. 

Having MFA on your account is one of the best ways to prevent bad actors from gaining access to your account without you knowing. The sign up is quick and easy, and you will only be required to sign up once.

Once you have completed sign up, as before there will be no prompts on campus for functions like accessing Office applications. The details will be stored securely with Microsoft and can be changed by yourself at any time.

There are guides to complete sign up, as well as updating your details, on the ����ֱ�� website should you need them.

Unique exhibition showcases creative journey behind ����ֱ��’s new public art piece

Join us for a unique exhibition which will showcase the creative journey behind ����ֱ��'s new public art piece - open from 28th February to 21st March in the level 3 atrium!
The exhibition, ‘Painting a picture of university life,’ will showcase the research and processes involved in the development of the final artwork, which will launch later this year and take centre stage within the University grounds.
We encourage all staff and students to come along - you'll be introduced to a range of drawings created by the local artist, Martha Ellis, with the exhibition presenting her signature laser ‘cut out’ style which encapsulates and reflects the people and activities that make up the ����ֱ�� community.
Both the exhibition and the launch of the public art piece are planned to coincide with ����ֱ��'s 150th anniversary celebrations this year.��

Printing maintenance Friday 31/01/2025 15:00 to 16:00 

Information Technology Services (ITS) will be performing maintenance on the print server between 15:00 and 16:00 on Friday 31st. You will not be able to print/release prints during that period. 

The maintenance period will unfortunately reset the print queues and any stored jobs up to that point will be cleared and any unreleased jobs will need re-printed. 

Please make sure any stored jobs are released by 15:00 on Friday 31st.

Those parking outside of marked bays, on double yellow lines, or in disabled bays without a Blue Badge will be fined.

Musselburgh Controlled Parking Zone
To ensure that our neighbours can access their homes, parking within the residential streets adjacent to the campus is controlled by East Lothian Council through limited waiting times and permits. To avoid receiving a £100 penalty charge notice, drivers should comply with the restrictions indicated by the signs and markings displayed on the streets. Further details can be found . Dr Mary Irwin is a cultural historian, specialising in historical and contemporary television studies. She will present her book and engage in a Q&A with staff and students about the role of women in TV romantic comedy.
 
Love Wars – to appear with Bloomsbury next month – is the first dedicated overview of the international television romantic comedy. Love Wars examines the depiction of romantic love on the small screen from the 1960s to the present day, exploring a range of recurrent themes: attitudes to love, relationships, sex, class and money, feminism and post feminism, the family and shifting discourses of masculinity. The book emphasises the centrality of women, their lives and their friendship to the genre. TV shows discussed include The Liver Birds, Sex and The City, Friends and Gavin and Stacey.

Access using TOR and Proxies

����ֱ�� has implemented new measures to block access to its systems via TOR and anonymous proxy servers. This step strengthens security, reduces risks, and protects sensitive data from potential threats.
TOR and proxies are often used for anonymity but can also enable malicious activities such as cyberattacks and unauthorized access. Blocking these tools ensures:

•    Prevented Unauthorized Access: Only verified users can connect.
•    Reduced Risks: Mitigates potential threats from hidden attackers.
•    Enhanced Accountability: Promotes secure, identifiable connections.

Most users will not experience changes. Those attempting to access via TOR or proxies will receive a restriction notice, ensuring all connections are secure and verified. This change will be implemented on Monday 3rd February.

LGBTQ+ Flag Raising 

����ֱ��SU is delighted to announce that our 8th annual LGBTQ+ Flag Raising Ceremony will take place on Tuesday 4th February @ 1pm. This will be held at the flagpoles situated between Maggie’s and the exit to the train station. Each year at ����ֱ�� the Pride flag is flown for the rest of February to show ����ֱ��’s support for our LGBTQ+ community. The event will take approximately 30/45 minutes and there will be music and speeches to celebrate LGBTQ+ History month. If you are on campus, please come along to show your support.

SQA Higher Education Research Questionnaire

We are conducting research amongst Higher Education Institutes in Scotland. For this particular research we are concentrating on staff who have a teaching role within universities. We would be grateful if you help us share an online questionnaire with as many of your teaching colleagues as possible.  

The questionnaire covers a range of areas, including communications, contacts and views about SQA, SQA’s replacement body and SQA qualifications.  

The research is being undertaken on our behalf by Ashbrook Research & Consultancy Ltd.  Accordingly, all completed questionnaires will go directly to Ashbrook and it won’t be possible to identify individuals who complete the questionnaire.  The questionnaire should take no more than 10 minutes or so to complete.

Let Art Speak Our Mind - Exploring Cross-Connections between Video Art Methodologies, Trauma and Health

That art can act as a catalyst for wellbeing and health is widely understood. The nonverbal and affective qualities of art(making) play a significant role in soothing, processing and caring for traumatic tensions. But where exactly does art have its place within trauma work and healing?

This event joins together Regina Mosch's video art exhibition ‘what it felt like to dream fire I-III’ and a conversation on artworks and health with collaborators Adrienne McDermid-Thomas from Art Psychotherapy, Jess Orense from Mad Studies, Rachael Davis from Psychology and Mostafa Gamal from Education.

"Love on Film" screenings - get involved!

Introducing the Health Sciences - Dean’s Student Citizenship Award

FAO Health Sciences Students

We are excited to announce the launch of a new initiative in the School of Health Sciences that aligns with our culture of professionalism and ����ֱ��’s value of serving the community. The Dean’s Student Citizenship Award will recognise students who have demonstrated the University’s Graduate Attributes through meaningful volunteering activities undertaken on behalf of the School.

Approved Activities

Eligible activities for the Dean’s Award include:

• Student Representation: Representing your peers within the School.
• Supporting Programme-Related Events: Assisting with Health Sciences programme activities on or off campus.
• Engaging with External Stakeholders: Participating in events or meetings organised by the School.
• Delivering Campus Tours or Demonstrations: Showcasing Health Sciences initiatives to visitors.
• Manual Handling and Clinical Skills Support: Volunteering as a helper for skills sessions.
• Contributing to the School Blog or Social Media: Sharing insights and content on behalf of the School (more information on this to follow shortly)
• Facilitating Student Workshops: Collaborating with Student Reps to deliver workshops when required.

Eligibility

The award is open to all matriculated Health Sciences students. To be considered, you must:

1. Outline your activities using the .
2. We will verify your application form with your Programme Leader.
3. The Dean will review all applications annually.

Certificate of Award

You can complete the form on an annual basis and we will keep a record of all the activities you have participated in. Graduating students who demonstrate consistent and cumulative engagement in School volunteering activities throughout their time at ����ֱ�� will receive the Dean’s Student Citizenship Award and will be invited to a special event at the end of the academic year, where certificates will be presented.

VMware Horizon is now Omnissa Horizon

Last year, VMware sold the “H�ǰ������Dz�” platform to “O���Ծ�������”.

The latest update of the “H�ǰ������Dz�” client removes the “V�ѷɲ�����” branding and replaces it with “O���Ծ�������.”

You can find the new icon in the start menu by searching for “H�ǰ������Dz�.”

The look and feel are slightly different, but the application works as before the update.  The “VMware Horizon client” will continue to work if your device has not update as yet.

����ֱ�� Devices

����ֱ�� Devices will automatically be updated to “Omnissa Horizon” over the next few days, and you can access it via the instructions above if “VMware Horizon” is not shown.

Personal Devices (updating pre-installed Horizon client) 

VMware Horizon may automatically be updated to “Omnissa Horizon” based on your operating System and client settings.

If you still have “VMware Horizon” installed, then it will still work but we recommend updating to the latest release when convenient.

• Open VMware Horizon client
• You will see “M�⾱��.�糾��.����.�ܰ�”  server screen
• Click on the three dots at the top right
• Click “software update”
• “Check for updates”
• The application will install the latest version of the software (Please note this may request a reboot in some scenarios)

If you have not installed Horizon as yet, then you can get the  “Omnissa Horizon” client  from

Remote Access Guide has the configuration settings required to set up “Omnissa Horizon” Though it does reference “VMware Horizon”, the procedure is the same. The instructions will be updated to reflect the change from “V�ѷɲ�����” to “O���Ծ�������” as soon as possible.

The access method above has not changed because of the above, and access will continue as normal.

Wi-Fi and Network updates Wednesday and Thursday 

Information Technology Services (ITS) will perform essential Updates to our Wi-Fi and network infrastructure on Wednesday and Thursday this week. The updates mainly focus on the security of the network and Wi-Fi infrastructure.

We do not expect any outage periods during working hours on those days, but services will be at risk between 17:00-19:00. The services affected are:

• Wi-Fi
• Horizon (internal and external connections)
• SITS (internal and external connections)
• Printing

The Wi-Fi should be back up within 20 minutes, with other services back within 30 minutes if maintenance requires a reboot of infrastructure.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused, but we have tried to limit disruption for these essential security updates as best as possible.

ASSaM Seminar: Development education and the scandal of the human: the grammar of silence and erasure

In this seminar we take up the question of silence as an analytical category in order to reflect on the ways in which global citizenship education (GCE) remains largely Eurocentric in its orientation. We argue that at the heart of GCE is the assumption that the global citizen is a white, western and liberal subject. Consequently, in centring this European (universal) subject, what is elided is an account of the technologies of dispossession, deprivation and subjugation of the Others of global citizenship: those whose humanity has been/is being called into question and who are marked for harm. Finally, this seminar articulates ways in which, as 3 teacher educators, we can resist (re)producing in our practice the silences on the ‘ongoing struggle over the meaning of the human’.

Thanks to the fund, she was able to undertake a fully funded 8-week haute couture embroidery course with Hand and Lock! This new short course will help you improve your skills and confidence when reviewing and analysing data. 

Places are FREE on this fully online short course, which is entirely self-directed and can be studied around your commitments.

This Introductory to Data Literacy c�dzܰ�����:&�Բ�����;

• will help you understand and carry out basic data visualisation and analysis; &�Բ�����;
• will provide you with a basic introduction to a wide set of tools and software; 

• is flexible and delivered online – delivered in 10 separate units completed over six weeks; 

• is SCQF Level 7 (equivalent to first year undergraduate study); 

• is worth 10 credits (these don’t contribute to your UG degree) ; and 

• allows you to learn at your own pace.

Why do you need it? 

Things like dashboards, charts, and data skills are now essential tools, regardless of the field you want to work in. Whether you plan to work in health, the creative industries, the third sector or beyond, you’ll need to have a basic knowledge and understanding of data and how to analyse it.  No previous experience is required other than basic numeracy abilities. 

What previous ����ֱ�� students said about taking the course 

• I wish I had come across this before I did my last assessment as some of the topics were very similar.
•  I enjoyed the course, and as someone who isn’t great with maths or concepts relating to mathematics (equations), through the readings I found it quite easy to get into.
•  It has been an enriching and invaluable experience for me. The insights and knowledge I have gained from this course will undoubtedly contribute significantly to my academic and professional growth. I am particularly grateful for the support and guidance provided throughout the module.
•  I enjoyed the course. I used to work in market research with databases, so it was familiar but much more modern in technology and approach.

What can you expect? 

Each unit in the module will present theories, concepts and practical activities in an asynchronous, online environment using pre-recorded micro lectures, exercises, and formative assessments to track your progress.  Apart from the initial introductory one, the units are designed to be studied independently from one another and in no specific order, to facilitate the immediate application to your specific subject area. So long as you pass all the short, multiple-choice tests at the end of each unit, you will gain an additional 10-credits with a separate student transcript.

• Starts Monday 17^th February 2025 – you’ll have six weeks to complete all units. 
• Deadline for registration – Friday 10^th January 2025

TGIT Festive Edition on Thursday 5th December from 4:45pm - 6:15pm in Guthrie's

Hello Students! We will be holding a one-off TGIT event on Thursday 5th December from 4:45pm - 6:15pm in Guthrie's. For those of you who are new to ����ֱ��, TGIT (Thank Goodness it's Thursday) was a student support programme we ran in partnership with the SU over the previous two academic years to address the cost-of-living crisis and feelings of loneliness and isolation among our student community post-covid. We are reviving it for one night only in advance of the end-of-term assessment and examination period. Everyone is welcome! We will be serving up a delicious Christmas dinner (vegan, halal and gluten-free options available) as well as pudding! Come on down and take in the festivities, as Sir Paul Grice will be serving up turkey and trimmings in his Santa hat, along with a team of academic and administrative staff in their best/worst Christmas jumpers. It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas...!

PALS Sessions are student led learning sessions. They are a relaxed, fun and informal way to give and receive support for learning at ����ֱ��. As a PALS leader you will receive training and you will have the opportunity to help your fellow students in the years below you. PALS is an internationally recognised programme, and, as well as being rewarding, being a PALS leader will stand out on your CV as professional development: helping you build leadership skills and transferable skills.��

As a PALS leader, you work with other trained leaders (and a staff coordinator) to design and run supplementary support sessions for students in years below you in modules you have yourself completed. You would be joining our existing team of fantastic Leaders: you will be trained in designing and facilitating sessions before you start, and you will supported by the PALS coordinator and your PALS-Leader colleagues throughout. It is a volunteering opportunity, so all regular PALS sessions are unpaid, but we often have opportunities for paid work over the course of the year too. It’s also relatively flexible; on average PALS Leaders tend to spend approximately two hours every other week on their PALS work.��

Lunchtime event on "Academic Freedom, Academic Silence, Academic Responsibility"

The next lunchtime event of Decolonise Research NOW will be hosted on Thursday, 28th��November, 12-1pm in room 2174. We want to take time to speak about the notion of academic freedom in the context of colonisation and explore questions such as: Which hierarchies are present within the concept of academic freedom? When do we enact them? Where does responsibility and care fit within the concept of academic freedom?��
